Your fall road-trip checklist ​

Cooler weather is a great time to hit the road — but shorter days and changing temperatures ask a little more of your car. Before your next fall trip, run through this quick checklist. Most of it takes only a few minutes and can save you real headaches later.

Check your tires. Cold air lowers tire pressure, so check all four (and the spare) and fill them to the level listed in your owner's manual or the sticker inside the driver's door. While you're down there, glance at the tread — worn tires and wet fall roads don't mix well.

Test your battery. Batteries work harder as temperatures drop. If yours is a few years old or has been slow to start, have it tested before a long drive. It's a lot easier to replace one in the driveway than on the shoulder of a highway.

Top off your fluids. Check your oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid. Fall brings leaves, mud, and low sun glare, so full washer fluid and good wiper blades make a bigger difference than people expect.

Look at your lights. With daylight shrinking, you'll be driving in the dark more often. Walk around the car and confirm your headlights, brake lights, turn signals, and hazards all work. Ask someone to help, or use a reflection to check the brake lights.

Pack a small emergency kit. A flashlight, a blanket, jumper cables, some water, and a phone charger take up little space and are worth their weight if anything comes up. It's peace of mind for the whole trip.
