How to inspect a used car before you buy

Buying a used car is one of the smartest ways to get a lot of value for your money — a reliable vehicle without the steep drop in value that comes with buying new. A little inspection goes a long way toward feeling confident in your choice. Here's a simple walkthrough you can use on any used car.

It also gives you a better idea of whether the vehicle fits your daily needs, budget, and driving habits. With the right approach, shopping for a used car can be simple, practical, and rewarding.

Look underneath and under the hood. You don't need to be a mechanic. Just look for obvious leaks, puddles, or heavy corrosion. Under the hood, the fluids should look clean and be topped up, and belts and hoses shouldn't be cracked or frayed.

Check the inside. Sit in every seat. Test the air conditioning and heat, the windows, the lights, the radio, and the backup camera if it has one. Make sure the seatbelts work smoothly. Turn the key and watch the dashboard — warning lights should come on briefly, then go off.

Take it for a real test drive. Drive it the way you actually drive: some stop-and-go, and some faster road speeds if you can. Listen for unusual noises, feel for smooth braking and steering, and notice whether it shifts cleanly. Trust your gut — if something feels off, ask about it.
